5 Simple Ways You Can Choose Safer Body Products for You and Your Family
Many of the cosmetics that line our shelves contain chemicals which are known to be harmful to us, including endocrine disruptors, carcinogens, allergens, skin irritants, formaldehyde-releasing preservatives and neurotoxins.
And in the U.S. there is very little regulation of beauty products and cosmetics.
‘The Food and Drug Administration has no authority to require companies to test cosmetics products for safety. The agency does not review or approve the vast majority of products or ingredients before they go on the market.’ The Environmental Working Agency
‘With the exception of color additives and a few prohibited substances, cosmetics companies may use any ingredient or raw material in their products without government review or approval (FDA 2005). The Environmental Working Agency
Given just how much we use beauty and body products, and home many products the average women used before 8:30am, it’s essential that we try to educate ourselves and make the best possible choices for ourselves and our families.
Here are 5 tips to help you make safer choices:
1. Use the Sunnah Products where Possible.
They are natural and were used by the very best of creation (ﷺ). Make your intention to follow his (ﷺ) example and seek reward while taking care of your body as well. Siwak, olive oil, kohl and henna are easy adds to your beauty regime.
2. Go Natural/Organic Wherever Possible.
By simplifying your beauty regime and choosing natural products wherever you can, you can avoid the vast majority of harmful chemicals. And it’s a LOT easier and quicker to use natural products that you may imagine.
Try making your own natural cleansing grains and see just how easy it is and how great they are. Ma shaa Allah. I love them - they’re natural, feel great and are inexpensive to make.
You don't have to make everything yourself either. Websites like www.iherb.com are a fantastic resource and they deliver internationally!
And, if you’re not quite ready go completely natural, make your own, or give up your contouring powder, be sure to:
3. Check Your Labels.
Keep an extra close eye out for ‘paraben’ and especially propylparaben, isopropylparaben, butylparaben and isobutylparaben. Avoid ‘fragrance’ and rather choose fragrance-free and generally try to avoid commercial products with a gazillion ingredients in them that you can't pronounce.
4. Use the EWG Skin Deep Guide
This is a fantastic resource that allows you to check the safety of ingredients and products.
5. Educate Yourself, Be Heard and Always Select the Safest Option.
Education and knowledge is empowering and you vote with your dollars every time to purchase a product. If you stop buying products that contain harmful chemicals and write to companies asking them to remove those chemicals from their products, and enough people take a stand, it would completely transform the face of the industry!
