Chocolate Winter Bark – Nutrition by Nazima

Today I have the pleasure of sharing an interview and recipe from Nazima Qureshi, a registered dietitian, founder of Nutrition by Nazima and fellow dessert-lover!

When did you first become interested in healthy living and was there anything that first motivated you to embrace a healthy lifestyle?

When I was 14 years old, I accompanied my dad to see a dietitian to discuss his diabetes. That was the first time I was introduced to a dietitian and the concept of healthy eating. At that point, I knew I wanted to dedicate my life to helping others live a healthier lifestyle.

Did anyone play a role in your love of healthy food?

I was never really a "picky eater" so I was always open to trying out different foods. When I was completing my education in Nutrition, I came across so many dietitians, nutritionists, and chefs that created delicious food that tasted amazing. This inspired me to always put taste first and made me realize that I don't have to compromise on taste when I'm eating healthy.

What’s your ultimate healthy snack?

Energy bites! I make a batch almost every week. One of my favourite recipes is my Coconut Date Balls . Energy bites have the perfect balance of protein and fibre. It is so hard to find a healthy snack that isn't loaded with sugar so I like to make my own.Do you have a sweet tooth?

Any favourite desserts?

My husband and I both have a sweet tooth. I am a strong believer in a balanced approach, that incorporates dessert without the guilt! With that being said, we don't always have the regular treats at home. We either indulge on occasion (ice cream, chocolate, and cheesecake are our favourites) OR I make a healthier dessert to satisfy our sweet tooth. One of my favourites is this simple Chocolate Bark that only requires 4 ingredients!

One of your aims is to help others learn about healthy food while avoiding the overwhelm. What top 3 tips could you give to sisters on how to make healthy eating simple?
  1. Don't try and change everything overnight. Focus on one aspect of healthy eating, such as eating more vegetables at lunch. Once you have mastered that, work on transforming other aspects of your diet. Remember that it takes time and that's okay! It is a lifelong journey, not a race.
  2. Don't believe everything you read on social media or the internet. It can be hard to determine which information is accurate and applicable to your circumstance.
  3. Speak to a dietitian or nutritionist at least once. This is one of the best investments you can make to gain a better understanding of your health.
